The Tamil section of the Anna Centenary Library (ACL) at Kotturpuram was opened to public yesterday subsequent to its official inauguration few weeks before. Nearly one lakh books pertaining to different genre will be available at this Tamil section in the second floor of the building.
The first floor of the library is organized for comfort reading and children’s section. The second floor for Tamil and the third floor for English. More sections – Medicine, Management and Engineering, Science and Technology would also be opened in the third floor in 15 days with nearly two lakh books, said officials of the Public Library.
The Braille section, Children wing and periodicals are opened to readers at present. Children can start borrowing books for a nominal membership fee from November 14th– Children’s Day. Lending of other books in other sections would begin from January. The decision on the membership fee for the library is yet to be decided, the director of Public Libraries, G.Arivoli said.
This library along with Connemara Public Library will soon be networked online with 32 other district central libraries. A demonstration on this was held at ACL, last Thursday. This project is the initiative of National Resource Centre for Free Open Software.
The officials from the Department of Public Libraries inform that, once the networking is completed, public can access information about the library and catalogues online. Apart from checking the availability of the books, member can also renew their books online.
A system on enabling the members of the networked libraries to borrow and return books within the state would also be introduced soon. The department of Public Libraries is also planning to bring uniformity in their subscription fee and penalty across the libraries through out the state.
Rare books, Preservation units, Government documents, Photo and digital libraries are also available in this library. The management is also planning few stores and food court inside the library.
