Sri Lanka Ministry of Health says that 90 percent of Sri Lankans suffer from oral diseases.
It was revealed in a communiqu' issued by the Ministry to mark the National Oral Health Day that falls on October 31 each year.
The theme of this years' Oral Health Day is 'Healthy Mouth for Elderly Age'.
The Ministry has planned several activities during the period of October 31 to December 31 to make the elderly aware of the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene at old age.
The Ministry has identified over usage of sugar, carelessness in oral health, smoking and over chewing of betel leaves as the main causes for increased oral diseases in Sri Lanka.
The Health Ministry says that a recent survey has given the result that each Sri Lankan has at least six decaying teeth. Nearly half of all children aged 12 to 15 in Sri Lanka have tooth decay, the most recent report on oral health says.
