Sri Lankan Army clears over 300,000 landmines in the North and East

Sri Lanka Army demining teams have cleared over 300,000 landmines in the Northern and Eastern Provinces in addition to the other non-governmental mining organizations, the military said.

The military spokesperson Major General Ubhaya Medawala said the military has managed to clear a land area of 1,857 square kilometers.
Demining operations are carried out in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts.
Medawela told the media that the Army is also proceeding to build 4,000 houses and reconstruct 4,000 damaged houses for the internally displaced persons (IDPs).
