Sri Lanka doctors protest nursing service minutes

Sri Lanka Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) vehemently protests the proposed nursing service constitution or the service minutes.

The media spokesman of the GMOA Mahesh Epa says that such a constitution will create administrative problems since nurses seek change of management hierarchy.
But the Chairman of the All Lanka Nursing Union S.B. Mediwaththage said the struggle of the nurses is to upgrade nursing service and the GMOA's fear is unfair.

The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena recently said that the Ministry had decided to prepare and implement a nursing service constitution to provide solutions for the problems of the nurses.

The Minister said to media that he held discussions with nursing trade unions during past weeks. He said the trade unions requested the implementation of the nursing constitution with immediate effect.

The Ministry announced that the demands of the nurses would be met during next month after discussions with the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and other relevant officials.

Nursing service trade unions have raised arms against the Ministry and the All Lanka Nursing Union recently launched a one day token strike to campaign for their demands.
