Sri Lanka boxer wins first gold in 72 years at Commonwealth games

Sri Lankan boxer Manju Wanniarachchi today beat the Welsh boxer Sean McGoldrick in the bantamweight 56 kg division, to earn a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Wanniarachchi was awarded the fight on points at 16-14 as the two opponents were level at 7-7 after the final round.
Thirty-year-old Wanniarachchi who hails from Kandy brings Sri Lanka the first gold medal in boxing in 72 years. The last time Sri Lanka won a boxing Gold was at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney.
