Sri Lankan judge orders Rs. 100,000 bail for a theft of five rupees

A Sri Lankan judge has granted release to a 13-year-old minor girl on a personal surety worth of Rs. 100,000 (around US $ 1000) for a minor offence of stealing Rs. 5 (around US $ 5 cents), Hiru FM of Sri Lanka reported today.

Kalutara Additional Magistrate Namal Perera has ordered the bail, according to the radio station. He also directed the probation officer to submit a report regarding the girl on the 30th, the day of the next hearing.
The girl was arrested by Thebuwana police and produced in court based on a complaint lodged by a tenant lady of a business house against the girl for stealing Rs. 5 that was on a window sill of the house.
