Sri Lankan government to pay compensation to war affected IDPs

Sri Lanka's Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry has said that compensation amounting to Rs. 25 million is to be paid to nearly 250 internally displaced paersons (IDPs) who have been severely affected by the war and those who have lost their property due to the war
.Chairman of the Rehabilitation Authority E.A. Samarasinge has told the local media that in order to receive compensation the applicants have to be affected by the war, to have lived in the area, be registered at the Grama Niladhari and get the application approved by the District Secretariat in addition to not being given any compensation previously.

"Once we get the approved applications from the relevant District Secretariat we give them their compensation," Samarasinghe has said.

He has said that Rs. 10 million would be paid to persons severely affected by the war and Rs. 2.5 million would be paid as compensation to those who have lost their property and to public sector workers.

Ceremonies are to be held in the Mullaitivu and Vavuniya Districts to hand over the compensation to the IDPs, the Ministry said.
