A student from Sri Lanka's Ruhuna University who was wanted in connection with the alleged assault of another university student who later succumbed to his injuries has surrendered to the Badulla Police.
Ruhuna University student Indika Basnayake alias Bassa was wanted by the CID in connection with the alleged assault on Susantha Aruna Bandara, who died at the Badulla hospital recently.
Basnayake was produced before the Badulla Magistrate Yasarath Bandara Nelundeniya and released on bail. He was ordered to appear in court on September 24.
Basnayake was evading arrest when the CID started to search for him following a statement made by Bandara's mother that the suspect was responsible for assaulting her son.
However, the local media has reported that the postmortem of the deceased had revealed that the death was due to an abnormality in a blood vessel in the brain of the victim and that there was no evidence to suspect foul play.
Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) accused the police of the alleged assault which led to the death of the student.
