Under the programme 700 houses complete with all the facilities will be built for war heroes at each district level.
Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalla das told he state-run radio that one housing unit worth more than 2.5 million rupees added that 50,000 such units will be constructed for the war veterans under the Mahinda Chinthana policy manifesto.
Completing the first phase of this program, in July President Rajapaksa handed over keys to 25 houses in Senarathgama, Kandy to war heroes.
The Api Wenuwen Api fund has collected 700 million rupees with the contributions from local as well as ezpatriate Sri Lankans at the request of President Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The commanders of the tri forces and their wives, President of the Sewa Vanith Unit Ayoma Rajapaksa, Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge, ministers and parliamentarians were present at the event.
