The United National Party (UNP), the major opposition party of Sri Lanka today (13) said it has agreed in principle to the proposed local government election amendments.
UNP spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told a press conference that the party has agreed to the reforms in principle despite some reservations.
"Even though further clarification is needed, the party in general agrees with government on the changes," Karunatileka said.
According to him, among the issues the party had were the number of persons to be elected under the proportional representation (PR) system and the demarcation of the local councils.
