Marxist party affiliated trade union of Sri Lanka says hike in bread price burden the people

Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated National Trade Union Center (NTUC) says the government's decision that resulted in a three-rupee price hike for a loaf of bread has added to the burden of the people in the country.
NTUC Head and JVP Politburo member K.D. Lalkantha said that in the backdrop of the cost of living index increasing close to 220 units with the monthly cost for a family reaching close to Rs. 40,000 and without any increase in the monthly salaries of the working masses, it was unacceptable for the government to permit the increase of essential food commodities citing various reasons.

The government has cited that the price of a loaf of bread has been increased to encourage people to consume more rice and rice based food products.

Lalkantha says that people have opted to consume bread as it is cheaper than rice and convenient.

He adds that the increase in bread would also result in an increase in other wheat flour based food items.

Lalkantha said that people in the country should join forces to stand against such actions of the government that adds to the burdens shouldered by the people.
