Crossed-over Sri Lankan MPs say opposition party cannot cancel their memberships

The six opposition United National Party (UNP) legislators who crossed-over to the government Wednesday say they would take legal action if the UNP cancelled their party membership
.UNP Polonnaruwa District parliamentarian Earl Gunasekara has been quoted in the local media as saying that the party did not have the right to cancel their membership given that the membership of several other UNP MPs who have defected to the government remained intact.

According to Gunasekara, if the membership of a UNP MP who defected to the government is cancelled, then the membership of the UNP Deputy Leader should have been withdrawn when he joined the government a few years back.
UNP Galle District parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakara meanwhile, has reportedly said that they take legal action against the UNP if their membership is cancelled.
UNP parliamentarians Lakshman Seneviratne, Earl Gunasekara, Abdul Cader, Manusha Nanayakkara, Upkesha Swarnamalee, and Nimal Wijesinghe crossed-over to the government yesterday and voted for the government's constitutional amendments.
