National swimmer MB Balakrishnan, who was attacked in the city on Sunday, got an assurance from Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister MK Stalin that the culprits behind the incident would be apprehended soon.
Balakrishnan, who was chosen for government assistance for winning medals in the South Asian Federation Games earlier this year, turned up with a bandaged head to receive a cash award from Stalin. "The deputy CM enquired about his health and assured him that prompt action would be taken to bring the culprits to book," the swimmer's father, Dr M B Badrinath, told reporters.
Two men on motorbikes attacked Balakrishnan with cricket stumps on Sunday when he was on his way to a swimming pool in Shenoy Nagar for practice. Balakrishnan's coach T Chandrasekar said, "Despite his injuries, he managed to go to the secretariat and meet the deputy CM. He is very courageous and will soon return to his routine training and be prepared for the competition."
The police have formed special teams to investigate the incident and suspect the handiwork of professional henchmen in the attack.
