An accidental explosion at Karadiyanaru police station in Batticaloa of Eastern Sri Lanka, today (17) has killed of over 25 persons including two Chinese nationals.
Military Spokesperson Major General Ubhaya Medawala told ColomboPage that the bodies of 27 police personnel killed in the blast have been recovered by evening.
He said that another 49 persons have been injured in the blast and those who sustained severe injuries were airlifted to Colombo for treatment. The others who were injured have been admitted to the Batticaloa Base Hospital.
Chinese embassy officials have told the local media that a special probe would be held into the deaths of the two Chinese nationals.
According to Sri Lanka Army, the explosion had taken place when a stock of explosives was being loaded to a dump truck from a container parked in the Karadiyanaru Police.
Three such containers of explosives have been kept for safety in the police compound.
The stock being loaded has exploded and caught fire, causing the other three stationary containers also to catch fire and explode simultaneously.
The explosives reportedly were being loaded to the dump truck for the two Chinese national, who were representatives of a construction company working in the area.
Special police teams with the Government Analyst had already been flown to Batticaloa for investigations, the Army said.
