Sri Lanka student union protests demanding arrest of police officers

Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has organized a protest march today in the southern coastal town of Matara demanding the arrest of the police officers responsible for the death of a university. student late last month.


Thousands of university students have reportedly participated in the protest.
The protestors marched towards the Matara Police station demanding the arrest of the police officers who have allegedly assaulted Susantha Bandara, a third year student at the Ruhuna University on June 18, eventually resulting in his death last month.
The student protestors have brought traffic on the Colombo-Matara main road to a complete standstill.
The army, riot police and a special police contingent have reportedly been deployed in and around Matara town to prevent the protestors from proceeding beyond the Matara bus stand.
