65,000 homeless in Sri Lankan capital

There are around 65,000 homeless persons living in Colombo city, says Sri Lanka's National Housing Development Authority.



The Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) Jayantha Samaraweera said at a press briefing held in Colombo today that the housing needs would rise to 1.2 million by 2012.
The NHDA has increased the amount of the loan given to the persons with housing needs from Rs. 100,000 to 200,000 at an interest rate of 11 percent.
The Chairman said the system of issuing a receipt for the loan payments would also be changed adding that the Authority will take necessary measures to combat the homeless issue.
