Sri Lanka's NFF to launch island wide protest campaign against UN panel of experts

The NFF on Tuesday (06) launched a protest campaign and a sathyagraha outside the UN office in Colombo calling for the withdrawal of the panel. The party leader, Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday (08) converted the sathyagraha into a fast unto death.

NFF sources told ColomboPage that the party was firm in its stance and would continue with the protest until the UN Secretary-General withdraws the panel of experts.

The sources said that Minister Weerawansa was continuing with the fast and not even consuming any water.

"Doctors examined him and said his condition would be serious if he does not consume water," the NFF member said.

The NFF is to launch protests as well as sathyagraha campaigns island wide until their demand is met.

The UN in response to the protest closed its UNDP office in Colombo and recalled the Resident Coordinator to New York for consultations.
