A United National Party (UNP) parliamentary group headed by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon at the Temple Trees to conduct a special discussion centered on the constitutional amendments that are to be brought soon.
A meeting between the President and the Opposition Leader was also held on July 10 also regarding constitutional revisions.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Deputy Leader of UNP Karu Jayasooriya, Chairman of UNP MP Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, MP John Amaratunga and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauf Hakeem comprised the opposition delegation meeting the President.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation that the objective of the meeting is to arrive at a common consensus regarding drafting a people oriented constitution. He also said his party hopes to focus attention of the President regarding the appointment of a prime minister responsible to the parliament upon abolition of the executive presidential system.
Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Susil Premajayantha, Prof. G.L Peiris, Dinesh Gunawardena, Dullas Alahapperuma, and Basil Rajapaksa also participated in the discussions.
