Sri Lanka main opposition party to change its constitution

The Working Committee of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) met today with the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to finalize the party reforms proposed by the committee headed by parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera.

The Committee has decided to accept the changes proposed by the six-member Reforms Committee to the party constitution at the meeting, a party source said, adding that one of the changes will be to include a secret voting process to elect top posts to the party if there is no unanimous choice.
The top posts other than the leader include Deputy Leader, Assistant Leader, National Organizer, and Chairman.
The Working Committee has also discussed the holding of the party convention next month.
Party's General Secretary Tissa Attanayake yesterday said that according to the party constitution, the convention could be held within a minimum of 30 days after the Working Committee decides to hold a national convention.
