Singer MIA refuses to have quickie wedding for a US visa

Controversial British singer and musician MIA has said she is not willing to have a ‘quickie’ wedding to her American fiancée in order to obtain a USA green card.

The acclaimed hip-hop and pop star is of Tamil origin and has previously faced problems with US visa applications. The authorities have stalled in granting her a US visa in the past as a result of her outspoken views on Sri Lankan politics and her father’s involvement in the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) terrorist organisation.

However, she is now living in the US in New York and is preparing to marry her long-term partner Benjamin Bronfman with whom she had a child last year. However, she has been advised not to leave the US as she may have problems returning.

She says that, although she could have a ‘quickie’ marriage ceremony, which would enable her to get a US marriage visa and eventually a Green Card, she wants to wait and have a large wedding.

Regarding the quickie wedding, MIA said, "That's what they want me to do, but I'm not going to lose my integrity for that. I actually want a nice wedding. I'm not going to blow that. If they're gonna kick me out, it's going to be a fight, and it's an important fight to have."
