President to meet main opposition members on Monday to discuss Sri Lanka's constitutional amendments

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has today (10) invited a group of main opposition United National Party (UNP) members to meet with him on Monday (12) to discuss the proposed constitutional amendments.

Rajapaksa had extended the invitation following a request made by the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe today during a discussion between the two leaders at Temple Trees.

Rajapaksa and Wickremasinghe had discussed the government's proposed constitutional amendments and the Opposition Leader had said that the matter needed to be discussed at length with a group of UNP members. The President had then asked the UNPers to meet him on Monday.
However, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that even though the party had agreed to meet with the President to discuss the proposed amendments, it would continue with the island wide protest campaign launched against the amendments.
