Maximum security following clash between Sri Lanka police and residents in Colombo suburb

The tense situation resulted following a clash between Sri Lanka police and residents in Mattakkuliya, a suburb in capital Colombo has been brought under control with the help of Army, the authorities said.



The authorities have provided maximum security in the area as tension prevailed following a clash between the residents of Mattakkuliya and the police last night. The Court has ordered detention of 31 people allegedly involved in the clashes, for further interrogation.

Last night a mob in the area has forcibly enter the police station and attacked the police personnel and several vehicles and buildings following the arrest of a youth for possession of cocaine. Reportedly the youth had injured himself during an escape attempt and the mob had rushed in an attacked the police when they were transferring the youth to the hospital.

Police personnel of the Mattakkuliya police station had sought help from other police stations and the Army to control the unruly mob.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has visited the scene last night and ordered to beef up the security in the area.

Media reports said today that the IGP had ordered the immediate transfer of all personnel including the Officer-in-Charge of the Mattakkuliya Police.
