Sri Lankan government to continue with the PTA

The Sri Lankan government is to hold over 1,900 suspects arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) despite the relaxation of some emergency regulations.
Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne has said that while several regulations under the emergency law were relaxed the clauses pertaining to the arrest and detention of suspects under the PTA still remain.

Therefore, suspects arrested under the PTA are to remain in custody pending investigations.
According to the Prime Minister, authorities would continue to carry out arrests under the PTA and detain suspects for questioning.
Suspects can be arrested and detained for a period of time without being produced in Court under the PTA.
The government earlier in the month relaxed several measures under the emergency regulations.
