Sri Lanka to move prisons out of city limits

Sri Lankan authorities have planned to shift the prisons situated in prime land in Colombo, Kandy and other major cities out of the city limits in order to use the land more productively.
Accordingly, the prisons situated in Borella area in Colombo city are to be shifted to other areas.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Prison Reforms Ariyasiri Dissanayake said that the convicted prisoners will be jailed in prisons out of the city and the remand prisoners will be held close to the courts.
The Ministry is now acquiring state land for this purpose, sources said.
Meanwhile, plans are already afoot to shift Bogambara prison situated in the heart of Sri Lanka hill capital Kandy to Pallekale in the outskirts.
Many other prisons like those in Galle and Jaffna are also situated in city centers.
