Successive governments in Sri Lanka failed to address power sector issues - former Power and Energy Minister

Former Power and Energy Minister of Sri Lanka Patali Champika Ranawaka says that successive governments have failed to address issues in the power sector. Ranawaka said that the lack of a proper mechanism to determine the exact cost per unit of power and a tariff revision mechanism have resulted in the current issue over electricity tariff hike. He told the media that it is vital to conduct a technical audit in order to ascertain the exact cost of power generation, as the private power suppliers are currently providing electricity to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) at their own prices. Irrespective of who is in power the issues related to electricity have not been solved, he said. "In order to figure out where the losses are taking place, hydropower generation, thermal and renewable energy should all be individually evaluated," he explained. According to Ranawaka, the main reason for the issues related to electricity rate hikes is the lack of a proper policy for the revision of rates and even the Public Utilities Commission has not evaluated the current situation properly prior to the increase in electricity tariffs. He added that the electricity hike has become a campaign slogan for all parties in the country today but no solution has been brought forward by anyone so far.
