A six-member joint parliamentary delegation comprising delegates from all Indian political parties is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on Monday for a five-day tour.
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has organized the visit, aimed at enhancing the relationship between the two countries. The MPs are to begin their tour on Monday (April 8) and conclude on Friday (12).
In addition to meetings with Sri Lankan MPs and senior Ministers and political leaders, the MPs will also visit Jaffna to look at work on projects supported by the Indian government, particularly the owner-driven housing initiative, Sri Lanka's Indian High Commission announced on Friday.
The delegation comprises Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress), Sandeep Dikshit (Congress), Anurag Thakur (BJP), Dhananjay Singh (BSP), Goud Yaskhi (Congress) from the Lok Sabha, and Prakash Javadekar (BJP) accompanied by two FICCI representatives.
However, the MPs' visit has come under severe criticism from the pro-Eelam Tamil political parties and also from the ministers of the India's central government.
Opposing the visit Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan has urged the FICCI to cancel the proposed trip by the India parliamentary delegation to Sri Lanka.
In a letter written on Saturday to the FICCI president, Natarajan said she feels that the trip if undertaken will be "deeply hurtful to the cause of innocent Sri Lankan Tamils," and asked the FCICCI to cancel it in expression of solidarity with the Tamil people.Monday, 8 April 2013
