Sri Lanka to brief UNHRC on progress of investigations into high-profile killings in the East

The Attorney Generals' Department of Sri Lanka is to brief the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the progress of investigations into the high-profile killings that took place in the East in 2006, while the cease fire agreement was still in effect. A team of three senior Deputy Solicitors General will participate in the UNHRC sessions and respond to any queries on the investigations into the killing of five Tamil youth in Trincomalee and the killing of 17 local aid workers of the French aid agency Action Against Hunger in Muttur in 2006.
The Sri Lankan government undertook to recommence investigations into these incidents at the sessions last year. Deputy Solicitors General Shavendra Fernando, Suhada Gamalath and Dulip Navaz will leave for Geneva next month. An Attorney General's Department official told the media that a great deal of work has been carried out in the investigations into the incidents in Trincomalee and Muttur.
