Sri Lanka has a federal system under current governing system - Minister

Leader of National Freedom Front (NFF) and Minister Wimal Weerawansa says that under the current governing system with the provincial councils, the country has a federal system.
Weerawansa has said in an interview to print media that with the provincial council system the country has a federal system and not a unitary state as claimed. "Laws in the provincial councils are not approved by parliament, but parliament needs approval from the provincial councils to implement some laws. Although we speak of a unitary state, it is federal inside," he has noted. He has added that it is only parliament that should make law in a unitary state. Otherwise, it would be a federal system. Speaking of the alliance between the NFF and the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Weerawansa has said that it is not an alliance or a front. "We are engaged in a united approach and working jointly based on one issue. We will work together while working separately on this issue as well. It is not only these two parties; we are looking at getting other political parties and national movements also to join this cause. We have already discussed with the UNP and SLFP as well," he has said. According to Weerawansa, the campaign to abolish the 13th Amendment to the Constitution has to be successful for the country to move forward.
