Women's organizations in Sri Lanka have commenced a protest campaign against the 2013 budget proposals for its failure to provide relief to the people.
The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Women for Rights organization has commenced a leaflet distribution campaign against the budget.
The organization claims that some of the proposals in the budget have further burdened the masses.
"The leaflet distributed by the organization states that the fire in the hearth and the starvation by children are mostly felt by women as mothers, wives and sisters," the organization stated.
Issuing a statement, Women for Rights says people have been burdened by various kinds of taxes while those affiliated to the authorities have been given all privileges.
The organization has pointed out there is no pension scheme for about five million women who are employed in the Middle East or the social insurance scheme promised to about half a million widows.
The organization states that the women should unite and fight against this injustice.
