Sri Lanka court sentences Tamil man for 35 years for aiding to kill Sarath Fonseka

A Sri Lankan court today sentenced an ethnic Tamil man for aiding and abetting the attempted assassination of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. Menaka Wijesundara, the judge of Kegalle Provincial High Court sentenced the suspect S. Suriyakumar, a resident of Rambukkana for 35 years on four counts.
He is accused of accompanying the female suicide bomber from Jaffna, providing her shelter, arranging her to rent a house from Weliweriya and hiding the fact that she was a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to police. A pregnant female LTTE suicide bomber attempted to assassinate the former Army Commander at Army headquarters on April 25, 2006. However Fonseka's security blocked the path of the bomber from reaching the commander but nine people including the bomber were killed when she detonated the suicide jacket. Fonseka received serious injuries in the attack but recovered to assume duties three months later and went on to vanquish the terrorist organization in May 2009. -->
