Sri Lanka will not remove any military camps while threats still exist - President

The Sri Lankan government will not remove any military camp from their current locations in the country as long as threats exist to national security, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today.
Addressing the nation at the ceremony held at the Galle Face Green in Colombo today to mark the three-year anniversary of the end of terrorist war, the President said Sri Lanka is now free from barricades and impediments and heading towards rapid development. He noted that it is not advisable to remove any military camp od reduce the strength of the forces while threats to national security exist from overseas, especially from the Tamil diaspora in the Western countries who have not given up the Eelam dream yet. He also pointed out that military camps are located everywhere in the country, not just in the North and withdrawal of troops just to please the foreign powers would put the country in danger again. "The military still has a key role to play, to secure the peace that has been won," he said adding that the troops are also involved in the development work. He dismissed the allegations that the military is involved in civilian administration in the North and charged that some groups are trying to achieve Eelam goals the LTTE leader couldn't achieve by terror. The military recently said that Sri Lanka has not relaxed security measures in the country or reduced the strength of its security forces despite the conclusion of the war three years ago. Sri Lankan security forces comprehensively defeated the LTTE terrorist group and restored peace in May 2009. Although there are no known incidents of terrorist activities within the country since then, intelligence reports reveal that the overseas pro-LTTE groups and LTTE cadres who fled the country during and soon after the military operation are regrouping in Europe and Canada. President Rajapaksa also paid tribute to the fallen war heroes. He posthumously awarded the highest valor in combat, "Parama Weera Vibhushana" (Supreme Heroism Decoration), on 15 war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the battlefield.
