Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today stated that its Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa was making misleading comments about the party's joint May Day rally to be held in Jaffna.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference that
Premadasa's statements were misleading the party and the country. He said that Premadasa had in writing sought permission to not participate in the UNP May Day rally since the commemoration ceremony of his father, the late Ranasinghe Premadasa fell on the same day. Attanayake noted that permission had been granted since it was a reasonable request. Attanayake made these comments in response to a statement made by Premadasa to the media yesterday that he did not need nor take anyone's permission not to participate in the UNP May Day celebrations scheduled to be held in Jaffna. Premadasa had said he was not willing to participate in a May Day rally with parties that supported the same terrorist organization that killed his father. Former President Premadasa was killed in a Tamil Tiger suicide attack on the May Day rally in 1993. However, Attanayake said the decision to hold the party's May Day rally in Jaffna together with other parties was decided by the party's Working Committee at two meetings and that none of the members had raised any objection to it. He added that the May Day was being organized by MP Joseph Michael Perera, Daya Gamage and himself.
