Opposition Leader of Sri Lanka visits North ahead of May Day celebrations

Sri Lanka's Leader of Opposition and the United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremasinghe has commenced a four-day tour in the North ahead of his party's May Day celebrations scheduled to be held this year in Jaffna, the capital city of the Northern Province.
Wickremasinghe is expected to visit several parts in the North and meet with civilians, religious leaders and businessmen in the areas. He has visited Pooneryn and attended a special religious ritual, after which he had met with the people in the area. He had also visited the Maha Bodhi temple and the Kandasamy Kovil in the Kilinochchi town and had spoken with the residents of the area. He had then met with businessmen from the South who are carrying out businesses in the Nallur area in Jaffna. Wickremasinghe is to visit the Delft Island and Nagadeepa today where he is to hold five pocket meetings at each venue and will also visit the Nagadeepa Vihara and the Naga Pooshani Amman Kovil. The Opposition Leader is to meet with the Bishop of Jaffna and members of the Church of South India tomorrow. The UNP this year is to hold a joint May Day rally with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).
