Employees of Sri Lanka's state transport sector receive a salary increase

Employees attached to the state transport sector in Sri Lanka have received a salary increase. The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has granted an increase of Rs. 3,300 of the minimum basic wage for the Board's employees.
The SLTB has allocated Rs. 372 million to its budget to pay the increased salaries this year. The salary increase would be paid to the SLTB employees from the month of April and the minimum basic wage of an employee now stands at Rs. 11,730. According to the SLTB, apart from the minimum wage earners, the salaries of other grades would be increased in a manner it would not create a salary anomaly among the Board's staff. SLTB employees last month carried out a five-day strike in several depots island wide demanding the increase of the minimum basic wage paid to its employees.
