Chief Minister of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province to decide on early dissolution of PC after discussions

Eastern Province Chief Minister of Sri Lanka Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan says any decision to dissolve the Eastern Provincial Council this year would be made only after discussing about the matter. Chandrakanthan has said that
he has not yet received any official information of a move to prematurely dissolve the Eastern Provincial Council this year. Elections for the Eastern Provincial Council is due to be held in March 2013, but there is speculation that the Council would be dissolved mid this year. In the event a Provincial Council is to be dissolved, the President needs to get the consent of the respective Chief Minister to do so according to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Chandrakanthan has noted that while government authorities have not yet approached him with such an issue he would decide only after discussing the issue. The media last week reported that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was likely to meet with Chandrakanthan to discuss the dissolution of the Eastern Provincial Council in the next few days. Meanwhile, governing party ally, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has decided to commence political work in the East targeting an election.
