The main opposition United National Party (UNP) claims the appointment of the Sri Lanka Cricket captain is politically motivated.
UNP Western Provincial Councilor, Niroshan Padukka told the media that
a cricketer who is close to retirement has never been appointed as the captain of a cricket team. Padukka says the 34-year-old Mahela Jayawardena's re-appointment as captain of the Sri Lanka Cricket team has been politically motivated. He added that former captain Tillakaratne Dilshan had been forced to resign from the post. He charged that the Sri Lanka Cricket team has lost its strength since the cricketing sector has been in a total mess in the last few years. According to Padukka, the Sri Lanka Cricket team would fall among the lowest teams in the world if the authorities fail to address the issues faced by the sport.
