Sri Lankan court orders prison officials to ensure safety of former army commander

A Sri Lankan court today ordered the Commissioner of Prisons to take measures to ensure the safety of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka who is serving a jail term at the main Colombo Welikada prison.
The Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar today issued the order when Fonseka was brought to the courts this morning for the hearing of the infamous 'white flag' case.

Senior Defence Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti raised the issue that LTTE suspects from other prisons are being bought to the Welikada Prison and they may pose a threat to the safety of the former Army Commander who was also jailed at the same prison.

The Court then ordered the prison authorities to take appropriate measure to ensure the safety of the former commander and avoid taking LTTE prisoners near his cell.
