Ranil Wickremasinghe, the beleaguered leader of Sri Lanka's opposition United National Party (UNP), has initiated an inquiry to find out how a recording of the party's parliamentary group meeting held yesterday was leaked to the media.
A recording of the events that took place at the UNP parliamentary group meeting had reportedly been received by the media. UNP Spokesperson parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathileka has told the media that Wickremasinghe has ordered an inquiry into the leak. The recording had reportedly been made on a mobile phone and later been played by the media. Local media reported of heated arguments between pro-reformists supporting deputy leader Sajith Premadasa and the MPs loyal to Wickremasinghe during the UNP parliamentary group meeting yesterday. Several MPs have reportedly spoken against the present leadership of the party and while some have insisted on preserving the unity of the party ahead of local polls in October.
