Sri Lanka considering early abolition of emergency regulations

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka D.M. Jayaratne said today that the government is considering to abolish the emergency regulations soon following consultations with the National Security Council. Speaking during the debate to extend emergency regulations in parliament, Jayaratne said
the proposals have already been made to the National Security Council and that they would be presented to parliament shortly. He added that since the end of the war against the LTTE in May 2009, most of the clauses in the Public Security Ordinance have been abolished. However, he said a few of the clauses under the ordinance that were placed since August 2005 remained since the LTTE continues to be active overseas. Although the LTTE no longer existed in Sri Lanka, the pro-LTTE organizations such as Global Tamil Forum (GTF), Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), British Tamil Forum (BTF), Tamil National Council (TNC) and anti Sri Lankan NGOs backed by western countries were working under an agenda to tarnish the Sri Lankan image, the Premier told the parliament. The Prime Minister urged all parliamentarians to unite to defeat these pro- LTTE elements against Sri Lanka.
