The Sri Lanka Army says that it has commenced an island wide hunt to apprehend the army deserters in the country.
Military spokesman, Major General Ubaya Medawala said since November 01 2010, the Army has arrested 8,765 Army deserters. Among them are 32 officers, the spokesman added.
Official figures say that there are around 50,000 Army deserters.
Sri Lanka has decided to be stern on the Army deserters following several investigations that showed the involvement of a number of Army deserters in the recent wave of serious crimes.
