Over 600 Sri Lankan police officers file fundamental rights petitions

Sri Lanka Supreme Court today heard five Fundamental Rights petitions filed by 626 police sergeants seeking promotions to the grade of Sub Inspector.
The petitioners say that they have been subjected to injustice since the normal procedure of promoting police officers every eight years according to police regulations was defunct.

The petitioners also say that the officials who obtained lower marks in interviews were granted promotions causing injustice to them.

Counsel Sanjiva Jayawardana appearing for the petitioners said in courts that the hearing was postponed several times to seek mediation.

The apex court postponed the hearings to July 25.
