Fonseka to bring Contempt of Court charges against Sri Lankan newspaper editor

The counsel appearing for the former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, the main accused of the famous 'white flag' case expressed intentions of bringing Contempt of Court charges against Sunday Leader Editor Frederica Jansz in relation to unwarranted reporting about the court proceedings.

The senior counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti appearing for the former Army commander pointed out that there was an order not to report until the trial was concluded. However, they cited that an article appeared in the Sunday Leader last week had references to the ongoing trial.

He also informed courts that they hoped to raise the issue of charges after the dock statement by Fonseka is completed and also after the evidence of the defence witnesses are completed.

The accused Sarath Fonseka was not ready to deliver the court statement today due to illness, the lawyers appearing for him said.

The case was postponed to May 23.
