Sri Lankan court orders state-owned media institution to pay Rs. 500 million damages to UNP MP

A Sri Lankan court today has ordered a state-owned media institution to pay a sum of Rs. 500 million to a main opposition United National Party (UNP) legislator.

The Colombo District Court has ordered the state-owned Lake House to pay a sum of Rs. 500 million to UNP parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakse following a defamation case filed by him against the Sinhala weekend newspaper, Silumina published by Lake House.

Rajapakse had filed the defamation case against the newspaper over an article published on November 18, 2007.

Rajapakse, a former national list MP from the ruling party, crossed over to the UNP in November 2007.
