Hambanthota District parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa has accepted the post of Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) during the Working Committee meeting held today at the party headquarters SiriKotha.
According to the consensus reached during the meeting, the UNP working committee has unanimously agreed to retain Ranil Wickremasinghe as the party leader while Premadasa and Karu Jayasuriya will be Deputy Leaders.
Earlier today party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake expressed hope to reach consensus to resolve the party leadership crisis.
Wickremasinghe's leadership has come under severe criticism due to the party's inability to secure a win in any of the elections held since 2001.
