Sri Lanka storms in to World Cup Final

Sri Lanka won the first semi-final of the ICC World Cup crushing New Zealand's hopes for World Cup final today at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat against Sri Lanka, New Zealand set a modest score of 218 for Sri Lanka to chase.

In reply Sri Lanka struggled after Upul Tharanga was caught for 30 but Tillakaratne Dilshan (73) and Captain Kumar Sangakkara (54) steadied the runs and with Thilan Samaraweera's unbeaten 23 Sri Lanka cleared the way for the final.

Ending his remarkable career on home grounds Sri Lanka's greatest spinner Muttiah Muralitharan struck Scott Styris of New Zealand with his final ball to claim 2 for 42. Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis claimed three wickets each.

Sangakkara was the man-of-the-match for his multiple roles of batting, wicket keeping and leading the Sri Lankan team.

Sri Lanka will face the winner of the second semi-final between India and Pakistan tomorrow at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, India.

The final match will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India.
