Six dead, over 250,000 affected in Sri Lanka floods

Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center (DMC) says that at least six people have died and over 250,000 persons have been affected by the heavy rains experienced in over 10 districts in the country.


The DMC has set up 322 welfare centers in the areas affected by the rains to provide relief to the people affected by the second round of flooding in the country's North Central and Eastern Provinces.

The DMC reported that at least six people have been killed while another five including a Navy sailor have gone missing after their boat capsized during a rescue operation.

Meanwhile, spill gates have also been opened in all tanks in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Ampara, Vavuniya and Trincomalee Districts as almost all the tanks have reached spill levels.

In the first round of floods last month 43 people died and over a million were displaced.
