A protest to call for the release of former army commander of Sri Lanka

A protest calling for the release of Sri Lanka's former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Sarath Fonseka has been organized for Tuesday (8).

Fonseka's wife, Anoma Fonseka, has said the protest would be held at Campbell Park in Borella at 3 PM on Tuesday.

According to Anoma Fonseka, the protest would mark the first anniversary since her husband was detained and later arrested.

Issuing a statement, she said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his 2009 Independence Day speech, vowed to liberate the country from the scourge of terrorism before the Independence Day the following year.

According to her, the President could make such a confident statement because her husband, as the then Army Commander, had given that assurance.

Anoma called on all patriotic people to participate in the rally on Tuesday dressed in black.
