Indian Foreign Minister to discuss fishermen issue with his Sri Lankan counterpart

India's External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna is expected to discuss the issue of alleged killing of fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel with his Sri Lankan counterpart Prof. G. L. Peiris when the two meet at SAARC foreign ministers meeting in Thimphu this week.

Krishna is expected to convey India's concerns to Prof. Peiris on the sidelines of the foreign minister's meeting and seek an end to the tragic incidents, a PTI report said.

The Indian Minister will be seeking an update on the investigation ordered by the Sri Lankan government into the recent killing of two Indian fishermen within two weeks.

Sri Lanka has denied that its Navy is involved in the killings.

The 38th session of the SAARC Standing Committee meeting represented by foreign ministers of the member states commenced on Sunday in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Foreign ministers and delegations of the member countries will attend the 33rd Inter-Summit session of the SAARC council of ministers on February 8 and 9.

T. S. Tirumurti, Joint Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry who deals with Sri Lankan issues, is also arriving in Thimpu specifically for the meeting with Sri Lankan minister, the report said.
