A large number of nominations for the local government elections of Sri Lanka from several political parties and groups have reportedly been rejected.
Sixteen nomination papers have been rejected in Galle. Of the rejected nominations, five were from registered political parties. Meanwhile 10 nominations have been rejected from Matara district. All of them were submitted by independent groups.
Election Secretariat reports said that the major opposition United National Party (UNP) nomination for the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha has been rejected.
Nominations of 12 political parties and 17 independent groups for the local government institutes were rejected in Colombo district.
Ruling United People's Freedom Alliance nominations for a number of local government authorities have been rejected. They include Nuwara Eliya, Lindula, Talawakelle, Pallepola, Vilgamuwa, Yatinuwara, Monaragala, and Jaffna local government bodies.
