Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has said the party would take action against its members who had assaulted Puttalam District UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara.
UNP North Western Provincial Councilor Shantha Abeysekara and four others allegedly assaulted and seriously injured Range Bandara soon after the general elections in April.
The legislator found fault with the party secretary for not taking proper disciplinary action against those party members who were allegedly involved in the attack.
Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has however said that severe measures would be taken to penalize those responsible for Bandara's assault.
Jayasuriya had made this statement during a meeting with the UNP Puttalam District Youth Front.
Last week several of Bandara's supporters carried out a protest outside the party headquarters Sirikotha, calling for action against Bandara's attackers.
